In today's lesson I moved onto editing the advert, as I wanted to quickly try out my film poster idea and see if it works so that if it does not I can come up with another one before we take the pictures. I started by getting pictures of the two film posters I am using as inspiration, the Red Velvet album poster and a Clueless movie poster:
From this, I started designing my advert.
I started by adding the names of the three artists at the top, similar to the way the names are positioned in the Red Velvet album advert. I then wanted to add the song title, as the advert is promoting the song and music video, alongside the album again like Red Velvet. Initially, I used the same font as I used on the back cover, however as I was going for the movie poster style and was referencing Clueless, I decided to use a font design that resembled the Clueless style font. I was going to have the words Side Crush in white, however I changed it to pink to fit in with the other font and keep the colour scheme. I also did not want to reference Clueless too much, and make sure the song's individual colour was added:
I then placed it together, creating a basic template:
Next, I focused on the background. I wanted to use the three colour background that was used in the Jawbreaker poster and the Clueless photoshoot, so I chose to use the three colours that we had chosen to represent the girls in the video: Red/Burgundy for Ariana, Blue for Lil Kim and Black for Nicki Minaj:
However, after I had placed it together and looked at it for a while, I felt like the colours looked weird and too harsh together, especially with the pink font, and upon feedback from Sharay, I made the colours pastel, and added black lines in between each colour to create a separation for each group member. However, whilst editing this, I remembered that I had to add the group name to the advert. At first, I tried to style it like how Red Velvet did theirs (by adding the group name above the song title, so MTB's Side Crush) however, I felt like this did not fit so I added it in the middle in big letters. My idea is that when the girls are added they will go over the letters but not so much that you can't see it at all:
I still wanted to add an aspect that linked the girls names to the colours they were wearing in the video, as the background colour was changed to make it more appealing and easy on the eyes. At first, I changed the colour of the text but I did not like that, so then I added small rectangles behind the names with the artists colour. Again, I did not really like the way it looked. I looked at the Clueless poster and saw that it had text and behind it, a jagged style rectangle in different colours. I decided to try and recreate this on Illustrator, using the eraser tool and then duplicating it into the three different colours. I then added it to the poster to see how it looked and liked the end result so I kept it:
I then went on to add the writing, by creating somewhat of a tagline similar to how the tagline of Red Velvet's advert was written. I linked it to the date and the album title. Originally I put 'Side2Side' in pink however I felt the white colour change emphasised the title name, and as using colours and typography to highlight important bits of information was a particular technique I liked and said I would use when analysing my advert case studies, I decided to change it to white. I will most likely also change the date to a different colour:
By the end of the lesson, this is what I had:
